Summer’s over, backpacks are being packed, and suddenly you need to think about back to school lunches again…every single day. The good news is you don’t need a Pinterest board or a colourful bento box collection to pack something your child will actually eat and which will keep them full from morning math class all the way till afternoon gym.
Why Protein Matters for the School Day
Protein slows down digestion, which means a steadier blood sugar and fewer 10 a.m. crashes or lunchtime meltdowns. Aim for a source of protein in every lunch and pair it with grains, fruit, or starchy vegetables so there’s actual fuel for recesses, gym class, and the walk home.
Don’t Skip the Carbs
Protein is a necessity for energy, BUT carbs are very much welcomed. Kids (and tired parents) need the quick fuel carbs provide just as much as the staying power that protein provides. Kids need a large portion of their diet to be carbohydrates. Examples of options include whole grain breads, fruit, pasta, rice, pretzels, and granola bars ALL have a place in a balanced back to school lunch box.

5 Quick Back to School Lunches (10 Minutes or Less!)
- Turkey & Cheese Roll-Ups
Roll turkey slices (deli) and cheese slices into logs. Add whole-grain crackers and grapes on the side. Zero cooking required, with sufficient protein and carbs added.
- Egg Salad Pita Pocket
Mash hard-boiled eggs (prep the night/Sunday before) with a little mayo and mustard, and stuff into a whole wheat pita with cucumber slices.
- Yogurt, Granola, & Fruit Cup
Create a parfait with greek yogurt for protein, granola, and berries for carbs and crunch. Tip: pack the granola separately, so it stays crispy.
- Nut alternative Butter + Banana Sandwich
Lather two slices of bread with sunflower or soy butter. Thinly slice a banana, and stick it to the sandwich base. Assemble sides together.
- Cold Pasta Salad with Chickpeas
Toss pasta with chickpeas, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella balls, and a light dressing or olive oil. Make a big batch and portion for the week.

A Simple Formula to Remember
Protein + Carb + Fruit or Veggie + Something Fun!
That’s really all you need for a. back to school lunche. If you implement these four variables, you’ve packed a solid lunch, which equals no stress, no complicated recipes, and no 6 a.m. meal prep.
Quick Tips for the Whole Family To Get Back Into a Routine
- Prep proteins in bulk on the Sunday before a busy week: hard-boil a dozen eggs, grill a batch of chicken strips, and/or cook extra pasta.
- Let kids build their own: create a lunch station with pre-portioned items in the fridge or pantry for less morning chaos.
- Reuse dinner leftovers: last night’s rice and chicken can become today’s fried rice lunch.
- Keep a running list of 3 to 5 lunches your kid actually enjoys and eats, and rotate them. Variety is nice, but reliability wins on a busy Monday morning. It is so okay to pack the same thing everyday. Many kids do not have a lot of variety for lunch away from home.
Getting back into the school routine is enough of an adjustment without also reinventing lunch every day. Keep it simple, balance the protein with real carbs, and you’ll both make it through the first week just fine.
